Salad And Diverticulosis

When the story gets film

The first post, how exciting! I can not help myself
inauguration this blog with a positive comment, almost a eulogy, a film that has me really excited, Agora, one of the greatest contemporary directors, Alejandro Amenabar .
Friday, the 23, the film was released in all the rooms and guess how many people were there to see the spectacle of 23:00 in a well-known multiplex Montevarchi? 12 in all (including me and my boyfriend). Maybe not a movie for young and old, probably tell a story little known, certainly has been little or improperly advertised.

The story, in my opinion, is nothing short of fascinating: the philosopher Hypatia, a historical person existed, lived and died in Alexandria in the late fourth century, embodies a love for culture and reason, yet the drama of being a woman in the period in which he lived. Without going into an admiration for the character, so well played by Rachel Weisz, I found particularly interesting representation of the encounter / clash between three different religions in the Egyptian city: the pagans, jealous guardians of traditions and obsolete but also custodians of a ' enormous knowledge, Jews for a long time settled in a city where, however, was written the famous Septuagint (the first translation of the Old Testament in greek), and Christians just free to profess freely their religion that even a few decades has become the state religion of the Roman Empire to an end now . Perhaps the extreme
Amenabar and "demonize" Christians, emphasizing the ignorance and violence for cinematographic purposes; re-reading the story but did not go very far from the truth. Basically since their appearance Christians lack a real "identity" and were often confused with the Jews (a maturing and increasingly tangible mutual antipathy between the two religions in many ways similar) and above there was an itinerant preaching by the apostles before and after the missionaries who gave rise to the formation of seven "heresies", false prophets ..

But back to Agora, what touched me most was the time when the majority of Christians now burst with the approval of the prefect in the Library of Alexandria not only give you the sack, but the real deliberate destruction of ancient knowledge, they pay. Watching the burning of books, scrolls, to be precise, I was annoyed and irritated me. The need for damnatio memoriae, the need to destroy other than their own thinking, a willingness to rely solely on the dogma of the Holy Scriptures are very well marked in short, silent scenes of vernacular mystical delirium.
We do not have surprised the fires of the Inquisition, are nothing but repetitions of a model of a fee already established. Censorship, misinformation, or worse, false information, are not that yet another trivial proof that history repeats itself and that, unfortunately, is studied too little to avoid making the same mistakes.
However, I realize that I started to rant from the movie and then no brakes ... I like the blog, no one interrupts my boring monologues ... But returning to Amenabar, the direction is exemplary, not reaching the levels of Open your eyes, but it is definitely a high standard, the music is appropriate but not great and the cast is spot on. Doing
improperly advertising the film, which still survives for only another 2 or 3 days before being eliminated by the planning and consequently removed from shared memory, I find it a masterpiece.

I am sure that without being interested in history or religion, this film can give rise to many discussions related to the world in which we live is .. That is to say that religions must live together, intolerance and fanaticism, violence in the name of God do not know what cruel .. unfortunately it is not science fiction.
History is a mirror that deforms the things we think, but just a bit closer 'and more of the image is clear, understandable for everyone. The problem is that fewer people are close to this mirror and more are content to behave like Hypatia said, referring to the Christians "you never put in question the things you believe (maybe I did not mention the letter, but the meaning is what ..) that you rely on what we are told by the media, take the good news and we are content with no further thought and reflection because it is much more tiring than passively acquire information and, at the most comment . As Hypatia, I constantly put in question the things I believe, maybe they are inconsistent or maybe I simply adapting to the changes and stimuli around me.

I think that would be great if it came out a film of this level every week, but no audience and therefore would still remain the preserve of a small and ordinary public. As a result, a round of applause for their courage to Amenabar in risking a story so niche as one of Hypatia and an invitation to at least watch the trailer below!
